Nature X Humanity presents the first large-scale exhibition of visionary works by Oxman Architects, encouraging visitors to rethink the human relationship with nature by exploring new ways that buildings can be made, inhabited, and preserved. Oxman Architects combines science, technology, and art to reimagine architecture as part of the natural environment by developing digital software, tools, and new sustainable construction materials and techniques to propose single-material, environmentally responsive buildings. The exhibition also includes prototypes and models for wearables, furniture, and new architecture. Furthering counternarratives posed by architectural thinkers such as Buckminster Fuller, Anne Tyng, and Zaha Hadid, Oxman Architects’ radical questioning of a traditional approach to building with limited or destructive resources imagines a future of design aligned with nature.

Neri Oxman is principal of the New York-based Neri Oxman Architecture studio. She is also professor of Media Arts and Sciences at the MIT Media Lab, where she founded and directs the Mediated Matter research group, regarded as being at the frontier of innovation and scholarship for the design and construction of objects, buildings, and systems. Oxman received a doctorate in design computation from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and a master’s degree from the Architecture Association in London. A designer, professor, and collaborator, Oxman is considered one of the foremost thinkers and creators in the worlds of architecture, design, science, and engineering.

Jennifer Dunlop Fletcher, SFMOMA’s Helen Hilton Raiser Curator of Architecture and Design, is organizing Nature X Humanity: Oxman Architects. Recent curatorial projects include Conversation Pieces (2020); Tatiana Bilbao Estudio: Architecture From Outside In (2020), Far Out: Suits, Habs, and Labs for Outer Space (2019), Barbara Stauffacher Solomon (2019), The Sea Ranch: Architecture, Environment, and Idealism (2018), New Work: LANZA Atelier (2018), Noguchi’s Playscapes (2017), Typeface to Interface (2016), as well as commissioned installations by Bureau Spectacular (2017), and Claudy Jongstra (2016). Since joining SFMOMA in 2008, she has built the architecture and design collection with an emphasis on transformative works of design from 1980 to the present. Dunlop Fletcher holds a bachelors in art history from New York University, a masters in curatorial studies of contemporary art from Bard College, and a masters in architecture history and theory from Harvard University.
