Dan Graham, “Model for Clinic for a Suburban Site,” 1978. Painted wood, plexiglass, landscaping material (12,5 x 30 x 33,5 inches)

A compilation of fifteen interviews, including two previously unpublished, by Dan Graham (1942–2022) with artists, architects, musicians, art critics, and curators from around the world. In these interviews Graham’s intense interest in—and observation of—cultural phenomena such as rock music, architecture, urbanism, corporate culture, and art world politics and their historical development, overlaps and interferes with the articulated interest of the interviewers. Graham’s art, sense of humor, attitude, and point of view in regard of a wide variety of topics is highlighted throughout. In addition to the interviews, this volume also includes the essay, “The Museum in Evolution,” by Dan Graham, and an essay by the book’s editor, Gregor Stemmrich, on the development and far reaching implications of Graham’s work.

Gregor Stemmrich is professor of art and art history at the New York University Abu Dhabi (UAE) since 2015. He has taught art history before at the Freie Universität Berlin and at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden (Germany). He has published widely on topics of modern and contemporary art and is the editor of a number of books on art movements (Minimal Art. Eine kritische Retrospektive, 1995), on artists (Jeff Wall. Szenarien im Bildraum der Wirklichkeit, 1997; HAVING BEEN SAID – The Writings and Interviews of Lawrence Weiner 1968–2003, coedited with Gerti Fietzek), and on individual artworks (Robert Morris. HEARING, 2012). His publications include a monograph on Dan Graham (2008).
